MAKEDA M. DECLET is a Guyanese-American filmmaker, playwright, and actor, raised on network television and bootleg CDs. Her work blends humor and tragedy with moments of surrealism to explore ambition, family, and the myth of the American dream.

Her plays have been recognized by the O’Neill Playwrights’ Conference (semi-finalist, 2026; semi-finalist, 2025), the Ojai Playwrights Conference (finalist, 2025), and the Leah Playwriting Prize (Honorable Mention, 2024). Makeda also served as a writer in the mini-room for the FX television show, Suckhole.

Development programs include Boston Court Pasadena’s Playwrights Group; Rogue Machine’s Playwrights’ Roundtable; EST/LA’s New West Playwrights Under 30; Moving Arts’ MadLab Development Program; and Mara Brock Akil’s Story 27 Writers’ Colony.

She holds a BFA in Experimental Theater from NYU and an MFA in Writing for the Screen and Stage from Northwestern University.

Makeda grew up in Brooklyn, NY and now splits her time between Chicago and Los Angeles.
